I was recommended for this role and after not hearing back for two weeks, HR emailed me late at night asking for an interview at noon that same day. I met with HR and a VP. The conversation was going okay until they mentioned the position was 'essentially filled'. They then revealed they were offering (potential) contract work for early next year. I was told I'd hear back either way, but I doubt the contract will be approved, nor would I accept it. I was very upset by this bait-and-switch. After looking into the management and asking people about the museum, I feel like I dodged a bullet. HR's tone was also strange, like they were in a divine realm instead of a public institution.

We did some virtual interviews where they asked me situational questions. They wanted to know how I would act in certain circumstances and in different situations that apply to daily museum occurrences. It was pretty straightforward and the interview difficulty was considerably easy.

I spoke with three people: the Director of Talent, Director of STEM Education, and the COO. The Director of Talent was super helpful, giving me tips on how to talk about making money and creating without kits. She laid out the museum's main goals for this role. This was a brand new role and Makerspace for the museum, and the leadership didn't quite grasp the full potential of a Makerspace. They didn't ask about any best practices or similar programs elsewhere. Things like safety rules, storing tools, what tools to use, and budget for supplies hadn't even been thought about. The museum does have cool hands-on exhibits and lots of programs for camps, field trips, and teacher training connected to the next generation science standards. Everyone was really nice and friendly.

This was the strangest interview of my professional life. The HR interviewer made me uncomfortable and completely turned me off to working here. I shouldn't have been surprised based on other reviews. It doesn't take a lot of digging to figure out this one erratic "professional" is a big headache for everyone. I'm just grateful that I saw these red flags before actually becoming an employee.
