Technical Other

The interview process for this Technical Artist role at Level Ex was pretty lengthy. It involved an unpaid art test and conversations with at least six people across the company. While it was a good chance to get to know the team, the whole thing stretched over two months from when I applied until I heard back that the job was no longer available because of budget issues. I don't think the hiring team meant any harm, but it did make me question the company's structure and how stable things are.

Coding Technical

The process began with a recruiter call, followed by a 3-hour timed take-home test that included three coding challenges of different difficulty levels. After more than twenty years in the field, it's disappointing to see companies still using what feel like pointless coding puzzles to interview software engineers. I'd suggest focusing on meaningful discussions about work experience and technical skills, or maybe a peer programming exercise or joint code review. These methods would offer better insight into a candidate's fit than the old way of just giving applicants coding puzzles. I decided to withdraw my application, which is a shame because the company and its products sound interesting.

Behavioral Technical

I applied online in October and heard back in early December. I met with two different people, the Director of Talent Acquisition and the Director of User Acquisition. I chatted with them both within a few days of each other. I learned a lot about the position and they learned a lot about me. I did not get the job and I keep seeing it posted everywhere so I guess they haven't found who they are looking for yet.
