The CIO reached out after I applied and we had a chat about the role. Then there was a video panel interview with the CIO and another person who didn't turn his camera on. This second interviewer seemed to really go for tricky questions, the kind most network engineers wouldn't know instantly. It felt like he was just pulling random CCNP study guide questions. They also asked a "scenario" question which turned out to be a real problem they're dealing with now. So it felt like they were just getting free help with their problem. I emailed the CIO afterwards but never heard back.

So, like most academic positions, you start by submitting your application. If they like what they see, the first step is a preliminary call, presumably from a recruiter or someone on the hiring committee. After that, if it goes well, they'll invite you for an on-campus interview, which is the main event. And if that interview process is successful, then you get the offer. I think it might have helped that I also had a chance to chat with the search committee members at a national conference before all this.

It was a screening call and then a full day on-site with different people. A lot of time was spent asking me questions, but I didn't have many because I'd already done my research and knew things about the university that the administrator didn't. I also asked about my candidacy status, and they were unaware of an internal candidate, which they said was part of wanting 'change'. About three weeks later, I was told they decided to go with the internal candidate.

It started with an email chat with the department chair, then I visited the campus for the main interview. The campus interview included a chat with the department chair and the whole department staff. After that, I gave a presentation to the students.
