Student Success Mentor
You apply online and then have an interview that's about 20-30 minutes. If you're hired, you'll start training either in the summer or winter, and then begin work in the Spring or Fall semester. Your schedule is very flexible and based on what you provide.
- How do you manage your time?
Lecturer
The interview process included a teaching demonstration followed by a standard interview with a panel. The candidate felt that unless one had a prior relationship with the school, hopes should be kept low. After sending a follow-up email, there was no response from the chair, and a form rejection, which was not even for the correct department, was received 7 months later. The impression was that the interview was a formality, as a legitimate academic department wouldn't hire full-time faculty based on a single 45-minute Zoom interview.
- What is your motivation for wanting to teach at LCC?
Museum Specialist
This hiring process moved at a glacial pace. The job posting went live in February, but the initial interview didn't happen until mid-April. That first round was a committee interview. They asked a mix of general questions, like your biggest workplace strength or weakness, and more specific ones, such as what primary sources you'd use for a community college class. That first interview felt pretty professional. The next interview, with the director of the archives, was a different story. His behavior was unprofessional – he ate, checked his phone several times, and even made a jab about me coming from Manhattan to Queens. To top it off, he mailed a hard copy of my rejection letter to my current employer without any heads-up (though it didn't arrive because the address was wrong). It was a complete mess. It makes sense why they advertise jobs every year and the staff seems unhappy.
- Can you tell me about your greatest strengths at work?
- What would you consider your biggest weakness in a professional setting?
- How do you view diversity in the classroom?
Associate Director, Global Initiatives
I got a call on Wednesday at 4 pm asking if I could come in Thursday for an interview. I couldn't, so they gave me another day. I was sent the names of 5 people on the panel. When I arrived, an admin on the panel told me they were happy I was early because they wanted to go home. I had checked out the 5 people and noticed the highest ranking one wasn't there. I asked the 4-member panel, and the admin person said that person was no longer part of the process. They asked a series of predetermined questions, and nobody asked any follow-up questions. At the end, one adjunct said LaGuardia students weren't capable of securing internships, and the admin said their biggest challenge was getting the kids to transfer. I felt they sold the LaGuardia kids short. The whole interview was over in 22 minutes. It was a waste of my time.
