Software Developer
I sent in my application online and got a call back really quickly. The first interview was with someone who only asked HR-related questions and wasn't even in software development. This person had a really hard time listening to me. For example, after I mentioned making the Dean's list, they immediately asked if I had received any academic awards like the 'Dean's List.' When I repeated myself and mentioned another award for my major GPA and hours, they asked how students voted for my award, even though it wasn't a vote. I had to explain it was based on grades, and I had to repeat myself a lot because they weren't listening, making assumptions, and even arguing with me. Another instance was when they asked why I didn't want to move into a software developer role at my last job, insisting they had software developers there, even though I explained they'd outsourced everything and there were no such positions. Then they asked for a good reason to leave an employer. I gave a general answer but emphasized that I'm loyal and prefer to stay with a company long-term. They sent me a rejection, which doesn't make sense given my background: top of my class, perfect attendance and punctuality, excellent performance, great work ethic, and long job history. The only reason I wasn't a 'fit' seems to be the flawed interview process itself, as I wasn't asked any technical questions or skill assessments. It seems they prefer software developers who are approved by an HR interviewer with a Communications degree, which makes me wonder about their own listening skills.
- Could you please share your spouse's name and the ages of your children?
- Did you receive any academic awards, for instance, the Dean's List?
- Can you explain how the award based on your major GPA and credit hours was determined?
Software Engineer
I had a Google Meet with the recruiter who was really nice. They asked basic interview questions and some stuff about my resume. It was mainly behavioral questions to gauge if I'd be a good culture fit.
- Can you describe a situation where you encountered a challenge and how you managed to get through it?
Software Developer
I applied online and then had a phone interview. It was really weird because most of the interview was about what year I graduated high school and what I did every year until college graduation, instead of questions about my actual degree or college. The rest of the interview was about my internship and why I wanted the job. I felt the interview wasn't done well and the high school questions were held against me.
- Can you tell me what year you graduated high school?
