KIPP DC Teacher Interview Questions
& Process

The interview process was super simple. First, you submit an application. If they like your resume, you'll get a phone call for a formal interview. After that, they'll decide if they want you to come for an in-person interview. They'll cover your travel and one night's stay. The interview day itself is long, but really nice. All the school principals were super welcoming, and the students were great. You'll have to teach a lesson, and they'll watch you and give you feedback. That part's pretty nerve-wracking, but overall it was a good experience.

My interview process was pretty fast and easy. I had two phone interviews, then an in-person interview, and finally I did a classroom lesson. The phone interviews were with someone from headquarters, not directly connected to the school. After those, I was invited to DC to teach a sample lesson (but had to pay for my own lodging and food). The principal, who hires people at the school, barely showed up to the sample lesson, which was weird. Even with a full-time teacher there, the students were out of control. I got the job offer within a week and was told to start in five days.

KIPP reached out super fast after I applied online, like the next day. The application itself was pretty standard, asking about my education and work history, plus a couple of short essay questions about student goals and why I want to work at KIPP, especially with underserved students. They set up a phone interview within a few days. During the call, they asked why I wanted to work at KIPP, how I'd describe myself as a teacher, about the worst criticism I've received, how I manage the classroom and keep students engaged, how I've handled disagreements with teammates, and to describe a typical lesson and a scenario with a misbehaving student. They also asked about my background and resume. The interviewer was really nice and easy to talk to.
