It was two rounds of initial screening and then an onsite live task, using actual product and internal tools. A sample was shared 48 hrs ahead, and then you have two hours to train on the tools, create your solution, and present. Travel reimbursed. The overall process was thoughtful and carefully designed around the role.

My process involved an initial screen with a recruiter, and then 3 calls/video chats with team members. The calls in general were pretty basic, lots of standard issue type questions, didn't really do much to analyze my skills. I think they were more interested in where someone attended university than if the person had the skills to do the job correctly. Everyone seems nice, the issue is communication. During the process, the recruiter said I would hear something shortly after the last call. Heard nothing. Followed up, heard nothing. Followed up again....crickets. If you're not going to hire someone, that's totally fine, but at least be a professional and send some sort of acknowledgement. It's absolutely classless: they lack the dignity to give a simple, 30 second response after hours are spent interviewing. It's a shame, because Khan Academy provides a wonderful service to students, and the people were nice on the phone, but the recruiter I dealt with lacked the basic ability to do their job.

I had two rounds. Connected well with the first person, but not at all with the second. The second person was interested in how I would add an SAT-like test for the site, which I have zero interest in, and it showed. They also asked if I had concerns about the company, and when I mentioned the first person said it was scattered, the second person got irritated. They also made a backhand comment about people my age not using the gaming side of Khan and were surprised I did. It was a strange second interview with someone I would not want to work with. Probably best it stopped at interview #2.
