Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Khan Academy.
Senior Manager
Applied online and got a call from recruiting the next week. Had a quick intro chat with a recruiter, then a 1:1 with the hiring manager. After that, I was given a case to work on and then had a panel interview with the team. Got the offer about 3-4 days after the last interview. The whole process was really clear, straightforward, and well-organized. Everyone I met was friendly and welcoming.

The interview process starts with a phone screen and then moves to individual interviews. Khan Academy's process is extremely frustrating due to poor communication from their recruiting team. They mention the process takes months upfront, and it does because they are slow to respond, don't listen well, and lack internal team communication. This inefficiency and unprofessionalism make the process drag on. While their mission and development team seem great, the recruiting team's skills are subpar and don't reflect the company's outward mission. Recruiters often forget to update candidates on their status and ignore follow-up emails for months, which is embarrassing given that candidate interaction is their job. It's suggested they create instructional videos for their recruiting team on how to do their job, as their current process makes them look bad and elitist. If Khan Academy is about learning for everyone, they need to learn themselves, especially in recruiting and hiring, where they are failing. Beyond unskilled recruiters, the interviewers are formulaic and don't listen. My interviewer seemed disinterested from the start, clearly having pre-set questions but not listening to my answers. It was obvious she wasn't actively listening and just wanted to finish the interview quickly, which doesn't reflect well on the company or accurately assess talent. Khan Academy needs to get their hiring team in shape and not get complacent.

Khan Academy has a pretty intense interview process, usually 5-6 rounds. They start with a lot of phone or Skype calls before you ever have to go in person. It takes a while, makes you wonder if they miss out on good people. They mix in behavioral questions with stuff specific to the job. I guess that helps them see if you're a good fit. For my role, they had me do a project, which seems to be pretty common there. It does make you question if they're just looking for free work, which some other people have mentioned too and I don't think is super cool. Also, I had an interviewer who was really arrogant, which was a big turn-off and probably affected how I did. It made me second-guess wanting to work there. So, it's a mixed bag, and probably depends a lot on the specific job.
