The interview process was pretty standard. I applied on Glassdoor and then had to apply on their website. A recruiter called me to ask some quick questions about my experience and what I'm looking for. About a week later, I got scheduled for a face-to-face interview with the hiring manager and the Director of Financial Aid. Another week went by, and the recruiter called to let me know they were going to make an offer, but it wasn't going to be exactly what I asked for salary-wise. It wasn't a big jump from my last job, so I accepted.

I applied online through Kaplan's website and heard back from a recruiter the same day or the next via email. They sent a link to an online interviewing site where I had to use a device with a camera, I used my laptop. First, I had to answer an essay question by typing it out. Then, the rest of the interview involved answering about six questions on camera by myself, which was pretty distracting since you're just staring at yourself for two minutes at a time. One of the questions required me to pretend to sell them a product. I didn't make it to the in-person interview stage. I actually interviewed for this role back in 2011 and got a second interview with a director, but didn't get the job then. The HR person who called me back said she disagreed with the director's decision and thought I was a good candidate, but you know how bias can be. Kaplan should really reconsider their video interview process; it seems ineffective and like they're cutting corners. I didn't even get to talk to a real person, which doesn't seem like a fair shot. I think I was actually saved from a headache, though, based on other complaints I've seen about current employees and the pay structure changing to a low base plus commission.

Confirmed questions4 questions
  • Could you tell me about yourself?
  • Please provide a written response to the essay question.
  • Respond to approximately six interview questions on camera.

I began my interview process working in the admissions office. Then, I moved on to interviewing with the advising office. It was a group interview with 5 people. We did a couple of role-play scenarios about advising a student with a particular issue or handling a specific situation. They also asked standard questions like my motivations for wanting to be an advisor and why I'd be a good fit for the role.

Confirmed questions4 questions
  • How would you counsel a student facing a specific problem?
  • What's your approach to handling challenging student situations?
  • What interests you about becoming an advisor?

Presentation Behavioral

I went through an interview for the job, it was pretty casual. After that, I had to come back and audition by giving a short lesson. People there wrote evaluations of my presentation. The Dean then talked to me about my scores. They looked at my presentation style, how I projected my voice, my whiteboard use, how clear the lesson was, and other things. After I was hired, I had to send official transcripts and do a bunch of onboarding paperwork and online training (like sexual harassment and security). It took about three weeks from the interview call to being ready to teach.

Confirmed questions1 question
  • I was penalized for mentioning I was tired before the lesson, not realizing I was already being evaluated, which surprised me.
