Kansas Department of Health and Environment Interview Questions
& Process

Started with a quick chat over the phone, then I spoke with the team I would have been joining. My future manager and some of the people I'd be working with were there. They asked me some standard interview questions and went over my background and experience.

The interview felt very automated, like talking to a robot. There were three people on the panel, and they all seemed annoyed to be there interviewing me. They asked questions straight off a list, very mechanically, with no personal touch at all, which made the whole thing really awkward. Didn't leave a good impression.

The interview process was of average difficulty. They really emphasized the no hybrid model for 5 days a week. There were general SQL questions and more behavioral questions. They highlighted descriptions about the job and expectations during the interview.

I finished the lengthy online application and was hoping for a state job since I recently moved from Florida where I worked for UF. I was excited about this supervisor position managing the ordering of supplies for health and environmental tests. It seemed like a good starter supervisor role, overseeing only about 6 employees, and I have a year of prior supervisory experience. I felt qualified given my work history, skills, college education, and personality. I met with a panel of three women from the same department, one of whom would be my direct manager. I brought folders with my resume, references, college degree, and state tax ID letter. The interview went well, and I felt confident answering questions. This was similar to about 10 other Kansas State Career interviews I had. My references were contacted, and another position in a different state department led to a second interview for that job. Unfortunately, for other interviews, they hired internally. One person told me they typically hire within and don't favor out-of-state candidates, even though they legally have to interview others. They even hire relatives with no experience over qualified people. Despite living here for 15 months, I haven't found a job. Three interviews asked about childcare arrangements, which I hadn't mentioned having a son but I do, and I felt very discriminated against. However, I haven't heard back from this department, so I'm still hopeful. Six months later, I received a letter stating I wasn't selected. I later found out they hired someone internally. I emailed for feedback and advice but never got a response.
