First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Johnson Controls.
Calibration Technician
I first had to schedule my phone interview, and the recruiter asked if I knew about the company. I said yes, and he seemed disappointed and told me to just hang up because he had to read a statement about how great the company is. It felt really dystopian. I asked if the job was hourly or salary, and he explained what salary is. He didn't know anything about the position, so I asked more questions. The next person who scheduled my interview said it was in person. It took her a while to find the address. The interview was at a time when the doors were locked, and I was stuck outside until someone let me in. The interview itself went well; I shared my knowledge and explained why the role is needed and pointed out some problems. I got an offer a few days later, but it didn't include benefits or vacation details. I asked for more info, and the documents I got were contradictory. The benefits weren't great, and the vacation time was average. They don't offer sick time, which is against my state's labor laws. I had to call the manager to find this out because the recruiter didn't know. After getting all the info, I asked how much time I had to decide. Later, they rescinded the offer because of budget issues. I chose 'yes, but I declined' because the real reason wasn't an option.
- Typical questions for this unique position which was meant to add new functionality and capability to the organization.
Systems Technician
I applied for the Systems Technician role through my university's career site. Within two days, I got an email for an interview. The interview was with two employees who would be my managers. We started off talking about what I knew about Johnson Controls and my interest in the company. They were pretty open about the job duties and any challenges involved, which was nice. The rest of the interview focused on my resume and how my experience fits the job. I got to ask questions throughout, so I didn't have many left for the end. It became clear that neither side felt it was the right fit, so I didn't get an offer.

Maintenance Technician
The process was pretty straightforward. They asked me about my experience across different areas like plumbing, electrical work, woodworking, general maintenance, painting, and fabrication. It was pretty much what you'd expect for this kind of job.
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- Could you elaborate on your plumbing experience?
- Could you elaborate on your electrical experience?
