First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at John Thomas Financial.
Stockbroker Trainee
The interview process felt a lot like the movie Boiler Room. They seem to follow the rules strictly, but it's a really high-pressure place focused on aggressive sales rather than financial or technical analysis or recommending stocks based on fundamentals. Everyone I met was nice, but the overall vibe felt a bit unpolished.
- Would you be okay with working 50 to 60 hours a week?
- Are you comfortable with arriving at 6:30 AM daily, even before receiving pay?
- Is a weekly salary of $300 acceptable to you?
Stockbroker Trainee
The interview process started with a group interview on the first day. I was asked to introduce myself. After that, we took a tour of the office. I was then invited for a one-on-one interview the next day. During the second interview, the interviewer seemed to have forgotten what I said the day before, and stated that I might not be suited for the job because they need a hard worker. I tried to explain that I am a hard worker and can handle long hours, but he seemed to have already made up his mind. He mentioned that this is his usual process: ask a few questions, explain the program, and give a tour. He also indicated that he picks candidates based on his intuition. This process is making John Thomas Financial look bad.
- Who is your current living arrangement?
- What is your commute time to this location?
Trainee Stockbroker
The interview process was exceptional. They really know how to present the firm, and combined with the firm's look, you are automatically wowed. What separates their interview process from others is mainly that the recruiting agency points out ways that make them better than other firms. I didn't join because of word of mouth and internet research saying that many people ended up learning very little. That being said, it literally seemed 50/50 as to whether you were partnered with a good senior broker who could actually teach, and I didn't want to take that chance when I was also accepted to another firm that made sure you had a good teacher. From my outside view of the firm, they were definitely impressive, especially their economist and market analyst.
- What motivates your desire to become a broker?
Stockbroker Trainee
I first met the recruiter at a career fair, and they asked me to come in the next day for an interview. After that, I was asked back for a second interview and then got an offer right away.
- What is your understanding of the stockbroker trainee role?
