First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at JOHN MCNEIL STUDIO.
Account Manager
The interview had a phone screen, then an in-person with the hiring manager, and then potentially an interview with the founders if the first parts went well. I first talked to the recruiter on the phone. Then I went for an in-person interview with the hiring manager in a very small, stuffy work booth that felt like an interrogation.
- Have you managed multiple accounts before?
- Tell me about a situation where you had to multitask to manage several accounts simultaneously under strict deadlines.
Copywriter
I applied and got a call back pretty fast. They gave me a campus tour, and then I met with a team of Creative Directors. It was pretty relaxed, and they just wanted to see if I'd be a good personality fit. After that, I interviewed with the Executive Creative Director. That one was a bit more nerve-wracking, and they grilled me on why I chose to do certain things. They seemed to like me and said they wanted to hire me. Then, radio silence for about 6 months. They finally reached out and told me they wanted me to start the next week. Not the most professional handling of the situation.
- Could you present your portfolio and discuss the rationale behind your campaign choices?
- Can you elaborate on the decision-making behind specific campaigns?
- Tell me about a campaign you particularly enjoyed and walk me through it.
UI Engineer
Found these guys through an agency, and liked that they were in the East Bay. Did a phone interview, then an in-person to see if I was a good cultural fit, and then came back for a pair-coding test. My overall thoughts on the coding test were that they weren't super clear with requirements of at least 1 test and they didn't ask purposeful test-driven questions. I also felt like they didn't have a good understanding of SASS or even how CSS should be written(i.e. they don't use classes over elements, and they had examples that looked really bloated), and that they were randomly harsh on me for one of the JS tests I took, and it wasn't my fault on that. I think on a different day it might have been better for both sides, and they seemed like nice guys, but it wasn't a positive experience for me, and I didn't stand to gain a whole lot from it, especially when I only took 2 interviews before I got hired, thinking that it might be nice to work close to home(I live in the East Bay).

Studio Assistant
Had a short phone call, then an in-person interview about a week later. Didn't hear back after that, which was a bummer since I thought it went well. Maybe it was because I was new to the area and they thought I wouldn't be committed? Not sure. Would've been a great job right out of college.
- Can you describe a situation where you solved a problem?
- What do you consider your greatest accomplishment?
- How would you describe your interpersonal skills?
