First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at John Lewis & Partners.
Merchandiser
I thought it would be a big group interview, but there were only 3 of us. They put us in a room and showed us some made-up sales figures and floor plans for different brands in their store. We were given 20 minutes to talk about what we thought of the numbers and percentages and to plan a 10-minute presentation on how we'd boost sales. Just make sure to really share your thoughts and try to work together as a team when you're planning the presentation. It felt a bit strange because we all had to sit and figure out the numbers, so there were long quiet spells while they watched us. Also, it seemed like the others were more focused on talking the most, so don't be shy about saying what you think without repeating yourself. After that, we each had a one-on-one chat where they asked basic questions about availability and what we're up to right now. Hope it goes well!

Visual Merchandiser
Applied online and had to do a bunch of online tests to complete the application. Then got an email to pick an interview date. There was a group assessment with 11 people. We started with an ice breaker in small teams, then did a group task that was graded by assessors, and after that, I had a 1-1 interview. It was a really good experience, though the briefs were super vague, so my advice is to be as creative and artistic as possible to make yourself stand out!
- What is your preferred type of candy?
Merchandiser
The interview had two parts. First was an hour long group exercise, where we were divided into smaller groups to create and then present an outfit according to the criteria. This was followed by a one-to-one interview focusing on the candidate's availability, experience, and personal characteristics. Overall, I think it is quite long considering that the online application process you have to pass to get invited to an interview, takes about an hour to complete as well. Considering the pay, it is rather excessive.
- Can you describe your best and worst customer experiences?
