I had an online video interview on zoom with three professionals who deal with Japan relations. It lasted about 15 to 20 minutes and they asked me to give a brief introduction in Japanese.

So I got to the building and the doorman let me in after I showed my ID. Then I went up to the office floor. A former JET ALT greeted me and she was really nice and answered my questions about the program and the interview. She told me there would be 3 interviewers and that if they asked me to do a practice lesson on the whiteboard, I was doing well. I went in and sure enough, there were 3 people interviewing me. One was strict, but the others were nice. They asked me questions about how I deal with stress and how I'd handle cultural exchange. Then they asked me to do a short, improvised sample lesson on the whiteboard. It wasn't as bad as I thought, but it was intense.

There were three interviewers, all with some connection to JET, one being the JET Alumni President, another from the Embassy in Japan, and a former JET participant. Two interviewers were friendly, but one was quite rude and asked odd questions, giving strange looks when I asked for clarification on her poor questions. You're guided to a room where you'll wait with others for your scheduled interview time. Keep in mind interviewers might be present in the waiting area, so maintain good conduct.

  • What three items would you bring to symbolize America?
  • Could you explain your reasons for choosing the specific work locations?
