First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Jet black.
Director
The interview process was organized and structured, with each interviewer having a specific role. I met a good mix of employees that I'd be working with if hired. They move quickly to get the talent they want and value your time. I received an offer within 24 hours of their deliberation, and an official letter within 24 hours of that.
- Tell me about a situation where you were assigned a task outside your usual responsibilities and how you managed it.
IT Manager
The whole process took about five weeks. First, I had a phone screen, then a long gap of about a week and a half before anything else happened. It took nearly three weeks just to get the on-site scheduled, and the recruiter went silent for over a week, twice. The in-person interviews were okay except one person didn't show up. I tried to tell the recruiter, but they never responded, so I waited. When the interviewer asked about who I'd met, I mentioned the no-show and they basically blamed me for not doing anything about it. Then they asked me to stay longer, which I couldn't. It was all pretty chaotic and embarrassing, just like other reviews say. This place is disorganized.
- Could you describe your approach to managing a team?
Learning Operations Director
My experience with this start-up/incubator started well, with positive interactions with the initial recruiter and the supposed hiring manager, though these calls were brief. After that, things became more complicated. I was asked to provide availability for several 30-minute remote video interviews, as the role would require me to relocate. I sent over my availability and waited a few days for confirmation. The coordinator confirmed my slots late at night my time, just a day before, and I confirmed, but I asked for details about the video connection, as the email mentioned an in-person interview with directions to their office. I didn't get a response for over 12 hours, so I contacted the coordinator and the original recruiter, who helped rearrange things. The next morning, the same day as my planned 3.5-hour video interview, the coordinator rescheduled due to people being out of office. While I understand start-up schedules can be unpredictable and I'm flexible, this felt excessive. Against my better judgment, I agreed to reschedule for the following week, blocking out another 3.5-hour window. Just two days before this new call, the recruiter informed me the position wouldn't be filled for the foreseeable future, as they'd use an internal resource. However, the job is still listed as open on their site, Indeed, and LinkedIn. It seems like an interesting place to work, and perhaps if I lived locally, navigating the hiring process would have been smoother. But I learned my lesson: if things seem chaotic, it's best to move on quickly.
- What would your initial 90 days entail in this role?
Marketing
The recruiter was nice and all, but a bit of a mess because the call with the hiring manager started off weirdly because they got mixed messages. The hiring manager seemed like a jerk from the get-go, super cold and distant, asking questions really fast and not making it feel like a real chat. After we hung up, I knew I didn't want to work for that hiring manager because they felt really out of touch, like they wouldn't be involved and wouldn't be a good mentor.
- Are you aware of current marketing best practices?
- Can you give me a baseline of your current knowledge in marketing?
