First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Janssen Research & Development.
Data Scientist
I first talked to someone from the Data Science team at a career fair, they were looking for PhDs with computation and stats skills. After I applied, I got an email to set up a phone interview. It was a 3-stage process: First, a 30-45 min phone call about my research, coding background, and interests. Second, a video call where I had to give a 15-minute, 5-slide presentation on my research and answer questions. Third, an all-day onsite interview with a 1-hour research presentation followed by about 5-8 meetings, each 30 minutes long, with different team members.
- Can you tell me about your research?
- What sparked your interest in Data Science?
- Can you share an example of a challenge you faced and how you overcame it?
Associate Scientist
Got referred by someone who works there. First, had a phone interview with the Associate Director, and they asked some technical questions. About two weeks after, I got invited for an in-person panel interview. It was supposed to be 45 min, but it went on for like 1 hour 20 min. I walked into this conference room and saw 5 people sitting there, with an empty chair for me at the end of the table, and a bottle of water waiting. It was kinda intimidating, they hit me with a lot of technical, behavioral, and situational questions. For some of the situational ones, I didn't have a direct experience, so I just said, 'I haven't really been in that situation before, but if I were, I would...'. After the interview, I wasn't super sure I aced it, but then two weeks later, they gave me the offer!
- Can you tell me about a time you dealt with confrontation and give an example?
- Describe a situation where an employee acted unethically and explain how you handled it.
- Tell me about a time a project partner didn't pull their weight and what you did about it.
Regulatory Affairs Contractor
The interview process is pretty standard. First, you talk to your contracting company, and they'll let you know when the phone interview is scheduled. You'll then have a phone conversation with the manager of the team you'd be joining. If they're impressed, you'll come in for an in-person interview on-site. Usually, you'll meet with the whole team to see if you'd be a good fit. After that, they'll make a decision about hiring you.
- Could you describe your capabilities regarding regulatory activities?
Statistician
I applied online, and about two weeks later, I got an email about a phone interview. That phone interview was about 40 minutes long. They said they'd invite me for an onsite interview after that. HR called me about 2 days later to get forms for the onsite interview and asked if I needed sponsorship. A week later, I got an email saying they couldn't offer me the position because they didn't have support for sponsorship.
- What is your motivation for seeking employment with this company?
