First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Jacksonville University.
Administrative
Seemed to be a normal, communicative experience - until it was not. Zoom interview first, then an in-person one. Everything seemed to go very well. Then I was completely ghosted after the in-person interview. No response to my follow-up status email. Interviews were conducted by department, not HR. Maybe there should be more departmental training on HR practices for interviewing conduct.
- What is your reason for wanting to leave your current employer?
Marketing and Communications Coordinator
This interview process lasted about two months and was quite straightforward. It involved an initial phone interview, followed by a 30-minute Zoom call. After that, I completed a marketing project to demonstrate my writing skills. The final stage was an in-person interview on campus, which included a tour of the university grounds via golf cart. While the process was smooth, I ultimately declined the offer because the salary of around $40k was not sufficient for me.

Applied on their website. Had a phone interview with the hiring manager, and they asked me to make a mock email asking alumni for donations. A few days later, they wanted me to make some design samples for the Dolphin Dash initiative. After another few days, they asked for an in-person interview on campus. It was from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, and I had to use personal time off. I met with 3 people from the marketing team, then 3 people from the advancement team. Both interviews were about 25 minutes each. Afterward, the hiring manager and director gave me a golf cart tour of the university. This felt weird because we hadn't discussed pay or an offer yet. They took me to their boathouse area and seemed to be trying to get me to accept a low offer. When the director learned I have a daughter, she kept mentioning 'work flexibility,' like summer Fridays off and winter break. While that's nice, it's not worth bad pay. I never heard back. A tip for future interviews: follow up with candidates. Don't say you love them and want to negotiate pay, then ghost them. Overall, it was a bad experience because I had to take PTO to go to campus for this strange situation. I heard the pay is around $40,000/year. They brag about benefits, but that's just not a livable wage. I wouldn't have accepted such a low offer and wouldn't recommend this department to colleagues looking for jobs.
- Which Adobe software do you like the most?
- Can you describe the creative work you've done in your current role?
Helpdesk Technician
The interview process involved two main rounds. The initial interview was quite relaxed, despite being with the Helpdesk Manager, Director of Operations, and Manager of Phone Services. They focused on my work history and my interest in the role. About a week later, I had a second interview with the Helpdesk Manager, Lead Technician, and Helpdesk Coordinator. This round delved into more technical questions, which were straightforward but asked at a rapid pace, likely to assess quick thinking. Both interviews felt laid back, even though they were interviews.
