Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at J. Crew.
Cashier
I first went through a group orientation, which I thought went well. However, I then had to wait about a month, and when I called, they said I wasn't who they were looking for. I finally got an offer after applying at a job fair at my school. I then had another group interview and got the job shortly after. I felt more comfortable the second time since I knew what to expect.
- What would you do if you caught someone stealing?
Cashier
It was a pretty standard interview process. There were two interviews, and they really want someone with retail experience. They're looking for people who are happy, friendly, and helpful, and who present themselves well. They might be a bit flexible on that last part, especially during busy seasons like the holidays, if you tick most of the boxes. The main thing is customer service – really making an effort, being pleasant, and assisting customers. Being capable is a given, but stellar customer service is non-negotiable. It's retail, and that's how it is.
- Can you describe your previous retail work experiences?
- What were your experiences in past retail roles like?
- How did you handle past retail situations?
Store Associate
It was a quick, casual, and very friendly interview. They explained the job to me and asked about myself and why I'd be a good candidate. The turnaround time was also fast. Overall, it was a good interview experience.
- Can you tell me about yourself and your hobbies?
