Project Manager
First, there was an online psychometric and personality test. Then, a virtual interview, followed by a final in-person interview where I had to present a 30/60/90 day plan. After that, there was a separate HR interview/chat. It felt pretty standard at first, and it was nice they brought people in person instead of just online. The in-person interview was alright, not amazing but not terrible. I got the impression the interviewers hadn't prepared much. Some of the HR questions were worded a bit oddly, like asking about my current manager and how I prefer to be managed. HR also hinted at recent internal instability. I was told my project management skills were clear, but they felt my personality was a bit introverted, which I found odd since they didn't ask me anything personal during the interview. The panel also consisted of two older men, lacking diversity and making small talk difficult for me as a 30-year-old woman. It felt like they were struggling to find a reason. I'm a successful project manager, good at communicating and building relationships to get work done. My ability to make small talk with two older men during an interview doesn't truly reflect this. A week later, the recruiter called and said they were pulling the job ad. When I asked if I would have been hired, he said probably not due to the 'introverted' comment, but that the panel hadn't made a final decision. It was a complete waste of time.
- Could you describe your personality, and are you more of an extrovert or an introvert?
- Can you tell me about your current manager?
- What is your preferred management style?
Project Manager
I had two phone screens for the Senior Project Manager role, one with a recruiter and another with a Director. They knew I didn't have insurance industry experience and only had internal project budgeting experience. Even so, I was invited for an onsite interview. There, four directors asked me similar questions about my work history, customer implementation project management experience, skills in agile and waterfall, and current project budget responsibilities. The final interview was with the Senior Director, who told me within minutes that I wasn't a good fit for a Senior Project Manager at iPipeline due to lack of industry and budget depth. However, they mentioned I could be considered for a regular Project Manager role. I felt my time was wasted, from the phone screens to the four hours onsite, especially since I applied for a senior position and made that clear. I was confused how I got so far if I didn't meet the criteria. I declined further opportunities with them via email that day, finding their process chaotic and inefficient.
- Can you share an example of a problem you faced during a customer implementation and how you resolved it?
Project Manager
Had a quick 30-minute chat with 3-4 people: director, hiring manager, and a teammate. It started out with normal questions, but then turned into a discussion about how we do things, where the company is headed, and the problems they're dealing with right now. They asked me to come in and see the team working, but I couldn't make that part happen, so that's where it ended.
- I spent most of the time talking, trying to highlight my strengths and my enthusiasm for Project Management, and also my interest in the company and my views on Project Management.
