First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Iona University.
Academic Advisor
I talked with people in the advising office. They were really nice and we just chatted about the school and the job. They asked me questions about myself and then told me about the job.
- Could you tell us something about yourself?
Assistant Professor
We start with a quick Zoom chat (around 25-30 mins). If that goes well, you'll come for a full day on campus. That day includes a job talk where you present your work, a 45-minute stint teaching one of our classes, and meetings with the Dean and Provost. We'll also have lunch and dinner with the department folks.
- What motivates your interest in joining our institution?
- Tell me about your research and how it fits with our department.
Coordinator
The process started with a phone interview to get to know candidates. The director of the office gave me little comfort that I would be seriously considered. She indicated she’s looking for someone with several years of experience, who can take over her responsibilities with little to no supervision and that she does not want to train the new hire. This sounds like an Associate Director role, which I can do, but the job description is entry level. She also challenged my education, saying online degrees don’t compare to hands-on experience. I didn’t expect to proceed but got a face-to-face interview invite. Again, she challenged my education and decided then I wasn’t her best choice. I was bummed, but later realized the red flags about this director. She’s dishonest about what she seeks and stubborn. Knowing I wasn’t her best choice from the phone interview, it was inconsiderate to invite me for a face-to-face, which took me away from my day job.
- Could you explain what an emotional support animal is?
Lecturer
The interview process was straightforward and not overly rigorous. The primary goal was to confirm your existence and suitability. The atmosphere was notably friendly and collaborative. It's a small campus with a significant on-campus student population. The library is adequate. Faculty quality seems inconsistent. Public transport options are limited.
