It was a long and difficult process, and it got personal because they really care about the people who work with the students. Being vulnerable is the best approach because it's respected and seen as a plus.

The HR rep canceled on me 7 minutes before our scheduled interview with no explanation and then didn't reply to my follow-up email for 3 business days about rescheduling. HR finally got back to me saying they were going with an internal candidate. Honestly, this shows terrible planning by HR. Save your time. If HR can't even plan a hiring round, they're probably a pain to work with.

I got contacted by an HR recruiter on Indeed, and their client, Intervarsity, wanted to do a phone interview. I wasn't sure at first, but after some back and forth, I agreed. The phone interview was kind of awkward and weird. The manager mentioned that this job would involve fundraising for their own salary, like asking friends, family, and organizations for donations. Then they asked if I was religious or of the Christian faith. When I said I didn't really follow a specific religion, they said that candidates who were Christian would have an advantage. I get that Intervarsity's goal is to promote Christianity, but making someone feel less than because of their religion is not okay. If I'd known they were so strict about religion, I wouldn't have done the interview.

First, I had a chat with an HR person for a preliminary interview. Then, I interviewed with my direct supervisor and the team. It was a group interview over zoom. It felt pretty relaxed, but it was still a formal interview.
