& Process

I submitted my application online for teaching jobs at two of their schools on Saturday. One of the schools contacted me on Wednesday and asked me to come in for an interview. When I arrived, I checked in with the receptionist and was soon escorted to the principal's office by the administrative assistant. The principal and the dean of instruction met me and then proceeded to ask me several standard teaching-related questions. Following the Q&A, the principal mentioned they were looking for candidates to substitute or shadow in classrooms to learn classroom management and that they prioritize hiring qualified/veteran applicants. This led me to think about my past experience as a substitute there for 5 years, the mistreatment I faced, and my decision never to return. I also considered their hiring practices, often preferring friends and family or uncertified individuals over certified teachers due to cost, and that a key goal for new teachers is classroom management. I reflected on how veteran teachers have observed the negative impacts of this school and that I didn't go through alternative certification and student teaching just to be a substitute again, especially with the current teacher shortage. I thanked them for their time and departed, resolving not to apply or work there again.

Had a normal 45 minute interview with the principal. He looked at my resume for 10 minutes and made positive comments. The principal was well spoken and appeared to have a feel for the ILTexas mission statement. Be on Time, Be Respectful, and Be the best you can. What a bunch of crap.

After applying online and getting an internal referral, I got a call within about a week. They scheduled an in-person interview with the Assistant Principal, and I had to prepare a 10-minute mini-lesson. About a week after that, I was invited back for another interview, this time with the Principal. The whole process felt pretty smooth and comfortable during both interviews.
