First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Intermix.
Sales Associate
The interview started with a phone call and then moved to an in-person meeting. It was pretty direct, focusing on the role and client relationships. They also asked about my ability to sell both on the floor and through clienteling.
- What's your strategy for upselling a customer at the checkout?
Merchandise Associate
I went through three interviews. First, HR, then the Hiring Manager, and finally the Director. The first two chats were great, felt like a normal conversation, not an interview. The last one was weird though. The director kept her camera off, so I was talking to a black screen. She asked the same stuff repeatedly, almost like she didn't want me there. In the end, they didn't pick me, which was a shocker, especially after the director apparently misrepresented me.
- Can you share an instance where you encountered and resolved an issue?
Art Director
I got an email asking me to pick some times for a phone chat about a senior art director gig. I gave them some big chunks of time over two days to make it simple. The HR person said they couldn't do any of my times, so they suggested theirs, which I agreed to. A few days later, the scheduled time came. I waited and waited. After about 20 minutes, I called the interviewer, who totally forgot about our call. They immediately suggested the next day. At this point, I figured they were clueless, maybe fresh out of college or an intern handling applicants. The next day, they called. They went through a bunch of standard questions that some HR consultant probably told them were key. "Tell me about a time you failed" and "What inspires you" were a couple I remember. Those and other behavioral questions to catch you off guard probably had checkboxes next to them, like '1' for 'Bad Answer' and '5' for 'Great Answer,' because it felt more like an interrogation than a chat. About halfway through, I jumped in and asked, "Are we actually going to talk about the job and how my skills fit?" I got through the interrogation and finally got to ask if they'd actually looked at my online portfolio; after all, for an artist/designer role, wouldn't that be the first thing you'd check before wasting time interviewing people? Nope, they hadn't even bothered to look at my work, which I thought was totally in line with the company's look and brand. I never heard back. Their interview process seems to be run by kids, and your work doesn't seem to matter initially. Honestly, it was the worst and most pointless interview I've ever had and soured me on the company.
- Can you tell me about a time you failed or messed something up, and explain how you corrected it?
- What are your sources of inspiration?
Store Manager
The first interview was in person with the Store Manager. The second interview was in person with the area manager. The last interview was in person with a district manager. All 3 interviews were casual and took place in the stock-room. How you look really matters for getting a follow-up or an offer. Later on, when I did interviews, I'd get asked about the candidate's appearance, like 'was she cute?' 'was she styled?' 'does she look like an Intermix girl?'. It was awful, but maybe it's better now.
- What are your hobbies or what do you do for leisure?
- Tell me about your nightlife and where you go out.
- Did the candidate look attractive?
