I found this Editorial job on Indeed and a week later, HR emailed to set up an initial phone call for the next week. The call was around 30 mins and went fine. I liked the company info and the roles they had. HR was really chill and honest, which was nice 'cause usually it's just about salary and availability. After that, I had an on-site interview with the group managers for about an hour. Then I went back one last time to meet the CEO and do a test. They explained the test was important and went over it, so I felt better about it. It wasn't too bad! I got the job offer, but turned it down 'cause I wanted to keep freelancing and do something new. The whole experience was smooth, I always knew what was happening, unlike some other places. If I hadn't decided to switch gears, I would've taken it.

I went in for an interview FOUR times. I should have known. I did know, really, but needed a job. The first interview I had with HR. They were disorganized and didn't realize the person I was scheduled to see had been called into a meeting. The second interview went great. I interviewed with the head of PR who said that, though I applied for an editorial position, my resume looked good for Public Relations and he passed me along to the President of the company. The third interview with the President of the company was in some hotel recruitment place which was super sketchy as I hadn't applied for a sales position and had no idea why the President would want to take time out of his day to sit in a crappy hotel lobby for 8 hours. When he asked me if I had been interviewed before I told him this was my THIRD interview and I had already spoken to the head of PR. His response, "Oh, that man no longer works here. He left yesterday." Turns out my 2nd interview was the same day the guy got fired/quit. My fourth interview was with the head of marketing who was taking over PR. He asked me if I would consider marketing instead. I interviewed 4 times for 3 DIFFERENT positions. At this point I had invested so much time I couldn't say no.

I was suspicious right away when I got a call just hours after applying, since I hadn't checked the company's Glassdoor reviews. They asked me a few things on the phone and then invited me in. Big mistake, as I later found out. The office was a total mess, a confusing maze of cubicles and stacked boxes, and it felt dirty. The chair they sat me in was hard plastic, the kind you'd expect in a shower. They mentioned moving soon, but that's no excuse for the state of things. Talking with two people from the accounting team, it's clear there's a lot of turnover; most of them have been there less than a year, and some roles had multiple people in a year. I wanted to bolt, but I stayed. Next, I had to do their 'written exams' - a short and a long test on basic math and reasoning. It felt ancient, like something from grade school. I could have aced it back then. I was supposed to meet with a higher-up, but luckily for me, he was unavailable. I figured they weren't interested. Never heard back. The best part was telling my friends about it later.

The interview for the Video Editor position was really dry and uncomfortable, and it was over in about 10 minutes. After that, the interviewer took me outside. I had another interview for the Project Coordinator role, which HR thought I'd be a great fit for. I went back inside to let the receptionist know and waited again for the next interview. The second interview was a bit longer, but then they had me do a 2-hour test. I followed up a bunch of times via email, but never heard back. It felt like a total waste of time, and the office had a really bad vibe.
