Technical Support Representative
The interview process usually has 1 phone screen and 1 in-person interview (or webcam). The phone screening is mostly to see if you're a good fit and will ask basic questions about web hosting, web tech, and Linux experience. The second interview will be more technical, usually with 2+ people. They'll ask about the LAMP stack, email, DNS, and basic troubleshooting. Make sure to know everything on the study sheet they give you (often on the job posting or 'technical pipeline' page) because most of it will be covered.
- What's the difference between POP3 and IMAP, and what ports do they use (secure and non-secure)?
- Can you list some Linux commands?
- What is SMTP and which port(s) does it use?
Technical Support Engineer
So after I sent in my application, I got contacted to do some forms online, then the recruiter set up a screening interview. The questions were pretty similar to the management interview, but less detailed, mostly about Linux and email setup. A few days later I had a Skype interview with two managers. They started with a quick intro to the company and environment. Then they asked about attendance expectations, like if being late is okay. They also asked how I'd handle a customer asking for a supervisor. The rest was technical, asking me to explain how to fix email issues, what DNS is, if I owned domains, had hosting, or worked in a call center. They also wanted an example of good customer support, how I'd migrate a site, connect to a DB with PHP, explain acronyms with ports, list HTML tags, and confirm my Linux experience.
- What is the command for Gentoo's package management to rebuild all packages in the world file and their dependencies?
Technical Support Engineer
I found the job posting on Craigslist and sent my cover letter and resume. The next day, I got an email asking me to fill out an online questionnaire about my experience, which included a field for salary expectations. After I submitted that, I was asked to schedule a phone screen, which happened three days later. I prepped for it hoping for a good experience like some reviews, but unfortunately, the negative reviews were more accurate. They're actually looking for Linux experts but only paying $12-14/hr with a bonus based on resolving calls quickly (under 9.5 mins). I heard back in less than an hour after the phone screen with an offer for an unpaid, 8-week "Technical Pipeline Program" that doesn't guarantee a job. It seems like this program doesn't really prepare you for the industry, and if it did, why settle for such low pay in Denver?
