I initially connected with a recruiter at the school's job fair. Then, I received a call and was invited for an interview. The first part involved two written tests: one on basic math and another on general technology knowledge, covering things like circuit diagrams, components, logic truth tables, and network setups. After that, there were three in-person interviews. They were all quite standard, except for the final one with the head of the R&D Department, who made a rather discouraging comment about my choice to pursue computer science. The overall vibe of the workplace seemed quite formal.

The whole interview process lasted about 4 hours. First, there was an initial engineering test. After that, we took a tour of the facility. Then, there were two more timed tests focusing on mechanical aptitude and a logic test. Finally, there was a relaxed interview with the head of HR, who talked about the role and asked about me.

I had a phone interview with someone from HR, which I thought went well, and they said they wanted me to come in. I was expecting to meet with HR again when I got there, but they surprised me with a test first! I was pretty bummed about that, it would have been nice to know beforehand so I could have prepared.

I got the interview through a career fair. When I got to their location, I first took a 30 minute general knowledge test with questions like marking a ruler and abbreviations. After that, I had an hour long general engineering test covering topics like beam bending, vectors, basic electronics (V=IR), gears, and pulleys. Then, I was taken to the lead PhD's office for about an hour where they really drilled me. They even had me try to derive a partial differential equation for a series RLCC circuit with a battery, which I didn't get exactly but was on the right track. The PhD then tried to scare me about the job's importance and potential harm, but I responded calmly, which seemed to surprise and slightly impress them. They also criticized my master's degree, saying it's not highly valued in the US. Next, a specialized engineer had me go to a whiteboard to illustrate concepts in electromagnetics and heat transfer. I had a brief chat with the first engineer afterward, mostly small talk, before returning to HR. The HR person mentioned the PhD was very impressed, as he's a tough critic, and asked for my thoughts on the role. I replied that while I could do the job, it wasn't the right fit for me, and that concluded the process.
