Applying is pretty simple. Just use the Jobs@IU website and don't email the department head directly because they'll likely be annoyed. If you've worked for the university before, you know this. It's better to address your cover letter to the hiring manager, whose name you can find on the department's website. If you read the job description carefully, you'll know who that is. HR will review your application first to see if you meet the minimum requirements. If you do, they'll pass it to the hiring manager. Then, you just wait to hear back. You can track the process: 'HR Approved' means they're still reviewing resumes, 'Interviewing' means they've started interviews, and 'Filled' means someone accepted an offer. The interviews themselves can differ by department. Sometimes it's just with your potential supervisor, other times with a few people from the office, or even the whole office. Questions are usually behavior-based, so prepare by thinking of different scenarios related to the job description and how you'd handle them. Of course, there are standard questions like 'tell me about yourself' and 'what made you interested in this role?'. But mostly, they're behavior-based. After the interview, they'll usually give you a timeline. Stick to it and don't follow up until a few days after the 'you'll-know-by' date. Following up too aggressively can hurt your chances. Send thank-you notes though – they're always important. One crucial tip: if a department is hiring for multiple positions, only apply for ONE. Applying for more than one can get your application rejected because they'll think you're just looking for any job. I've had bosses tell me this. So, choose wisely! IU really likes enthusiasm, so show it if you're genuinely interested in the department or the type of work (like student services, PR, alumni relations, etc.). That's all I have. Good luck!

The interview process was pretty standard for this type of role. The person interviewing me was nice and the conversation felt pretty casual. They asked a lot about my background and what I knew about the company. All in all, it went well.
