First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Indiana Department of Correction.
Correctional Officer
The interview was on Zoom and they asked me about my past experiences. It was a pretty straightforward and effective interview.
- Do you have any previous military or security experience?
Correctional Officer
So the interview process kicks off with a panel interview. You'll be facing about 1 to 4 supervisors, like Sergeants, Lieutenants, or Captains. They'll take turns asking you questions straight from a form. After the panel gives you the thumbs up, you get to do some job shadowing. This is basically a guided tour of the facility with a correctional officer. Just a heads up, you'll need to go through security checks like X-rays, metal detectors, and a pat-down. Only bring your government ID and keys into the secure area – leave everything else out.
- Can you describe the kinds of individuals you find difficult to collaborate with?
Correctional Officer
You will be brought into an interview room where two staff members will be present. The exact flow of the interview will depend greatly on who is conducting it. Be ready for the typical questions. My interview went well, but that might not be the case for everyone. The Lieutenant had more to say than the Sergeant. It's important to find a middle ground, not being too aggressive or too submissive.
- What is your motivation for seeking employment with this organization?
Correctional Lieutenant
Interviewed by a board of 3 custody supervisors. The interview lasted about an hour. Each board member asked 6-7 questions concerning abilities, aptitude, and prior work history. This interview is designed for individuals with above-average experience in corrections overall. It's not suited for those seeking employment with little to no correctional experience.
- Did you ever conduct a security audit that led to improvements in the facility's operations?
