Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Independent Capital Management.
Financial Advisor
I had a conversation with the Office Manager, Dave Lumiqued, back in late December to apply for a Financial Advisor role. Before that, I worked at a National Bank for 11 years, where I was a Branch Manager and Private Banker, until I moved to Southern California. I went through 2 interviews, and each lasted about an hour.
- Can you discuss your previous experience in investment advising?
Financial Advisor
I applied online through my university's career center. After not hearing back for about a week, I called to follow up. They immediately offered me an interview, which was a bit surprising but what I wanted. A week later, I went to their San Diego office for the interview. It was in a small conference room with about 12-15 other candidates. They started by pitching the company to us and why we should want to work there. This was unexpected because usually, the company is trying to sell itself to candidates, not the other way around, which felt like a red flag. Afterward, they took us individually into a private office for what they called their 'first round interviews.' They asked only two questions, which are listed below. I decided not to proceed to the second round because the whole experience gave me a weird vibe. It felt like they were just broadly hiring a lot of people and would keep the best ones, which wasn't what I was looking for.
- How do you think you would fit in at ICM?
- What is your motivation for wanting to become a financial advisor?
Financial Advisor
The interview process was pretty straightforward, it was mainly a group presentation. The first and second interviews both lasted around two hours. I thought there'd be more one-on-one chats, but it was a good process overall. They explained the pay structure in a lot of detail, and by the second interview, there were no questions about how much anyone would get paid.
- Can you outline your marketing strategy?
