I interviewed for a data tech intern role at Microsoft. The team leads mainly wanted to see if I had a basic grasp of servers and data centers, but more importantly, if I was eager to learn more.

I applied for the LEAP apprenticeship, which was straightforward, just needing my resume in Markdown. The team reached out to set up an in-person interview, and Aparna was helpful with the scheduling. On the interview day, I had two parts: a technical one and a behavioral one. The technical part covered my past data analysis work and a system design question about building an app with specific requirements. The behavioral part focused on leadership, building conversations, and product marketing skills. The interviewers were knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging, making for a pleasant experience.

I applied online by submitting a couple of essays and was asked to come in for two interviews. Interviews were conducted by Microsoft Employees - first interviewer asked me to construct a method using data structures, and the second interviewer had me do a string manipulation question (determine if a string was an anagram) and discuss the Big O notation of various solutions. Many of the other applicants came from various dev bootcamps around the area, so that seems to be good preparation for the interview. Though from what I understand it is highly competitive - only about 10% of the applicants actually get into the program.
