First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at iMentor.
Director of Engineering
I had an initial phone screen with someone. Then they scheduled another hour-long interview for the next day. During that interview, they asked questions about software engineering challenges and asked vague questions like 'why are you the best software engineer?' which I felt had a specific expected answer. After that, I didn't hear back for a month. I had to reach out to find out they had decided to go with another candidate. Not sure if they would have ever told me.
- How would you define success in software engineering?
- Explain why you are the top candidate for a software engineering role.
Director of Evaluation and Research
My first step was a screening interview with the Senior Director of Talent to go over my background for the role. Next, I had a chat with a national team member I'd be working with. Then, that team member and others met with me for a part where I had to give a quick presentation about my past program assessment work, relating it to the job's needs. After that, I met the COO, who asked me more about how I approach program assessment step-by-step, my views on education program assessment, and my experience doing field research with the people impacted. I felt pretty good about how I did in the interviews and my chances for the job. Sadly, I didn't get picked because they "decided to pursue other candidates at this time." They did offer me a volunteer mentor role and said they'd consider me for future openings.
- Can you share an instance where you leveraged data and evaluation to gain consensus from stakeholders or comparable groups?
- Tell me about a time you used data and evaluation to achieve buy-in from stakeholders or similar audiences.
Program Manager
After an initial screening, I waited a week to be contacted for a face-to-face interview at their offices, which was supposed to be half a day. When I got there, other applicants were also present, and we all went through different interview stages throughout the day. There was a one-on-one with HR and the Program Director, a teaching interview with four program managers followed by a debrief, and a timed 40-minute data assessment where I had to answer three questions and email them back. Finally, there was a concluding interview with another program manager. Even though I felt I had strong skills, I wasn't sure if I'd proceed. The HR/talent person said I'd get 'next steps,' but after a long silence following my thank you letter, I knew I wasn't selected. They took over 8 days to send a rejection email. Expect many questions and manage your time well. Leave early, and have fun. While I didn't move forward, it was a good experience. Plan to be there from around 9:30 AM to 2 PM. The process is quite intense but also exciting.
- Can you share an instance of a challenging situation you faced with a young person and explain your approach to resolving it?
- How did you manage a difficult situation involving a youth?
Mentor
First, you'll submit an online application, which requires you to list references who will need to complete some questions before you can be accepted into the program, so pick them wisely. After that, you'll choose a date for an in-person meeting where they go over the entire process and you can sign up for your 30-minute phone interview slot and schedule your background check. Everyone is really nice and just wants to get to know you better. You'll find out if they have a suitable student for you and if your background check and references check out.
- What would you do if a mentee told you they were being bullied?
