First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at IKEA.
Visual Merchandiser
The recruitment process took 30 days. It involved an initial HR screening, followed by a meeting with the site's VM manager. Then, there was a 1.5-hour practical case study, split into 30 minutes of photo analysis and 1 hour to create a site plan, mood board, and merchandising display. I had to follow up multiple times via email and phone to get to each stage, even though I was approved at every step. Even though the manager liked the practical case study and felt I fit the company's values, they didn't hire me. The recruiter didn't give any specific feedback, just said my profile fit IKEA's values and the case study was good, but they wouldn't proceed. I'm disappointed about the wasted time and effort in a process that seemed to have approval at every turn, but ended without clear reasons for the rejection.

Visual Merchandiser
I interviewed for a Visual Merchandiser position at IKEA, and it was a pretty good experience. The first step was an AI interview where I had to answer questions with timed responses. It felt a bit weird talking to a screen at first, but I got the hang of it as it went on. While it was a smooth process, I would have preferred talking to a real person, like a recruiter, because it would have been more natural. Still, the process was organized and the questions were relevant. If you're prepping for this, I suggest practicing speaking clearly and quickly to get used to the time limits.
- What is your motivation for seeking employment at IKEA?
- Can you describe a situation involving task prioritization and outline your approach?
- How do you manage and cope with stressful situations?
Visual Merchandiser
I was first contacted by phone, then they gave me a project to do in a few days, and then I had an in-person interview. I've always admired this company and would love to be part of the team, but honestly, after the last interview, my opinion of them has diminished somewhat. The project they assigned me required skills that, as I had already stated on my CV, I didn't have. Despite this, with the short time available, I downloaded a design program (using the free trial) even though I had no knowledge of 3D; I managed and completed what was asked of me. Now, during the interview, which lasted 50 minutes, the project was barely discussed, only after I asked for an opinion, and what's more, the recruiter discredited the program I had downloaded (without offering suggestions) asking if I had knowledge of other 3D programs, which as I had pointed out both in the phone interview and on my CV, I do not. We are talking about an interview for an internship, so it's about hiring someone to TRAIN, an intern. But evidently, this role is only to reduce salary costs if they then require professional skills. An interview lasting almost an hour where they asked question after question, but to the questions I asked, I received superficial answers from a recruiter who seemed almost annoyed. After leaving, I immediately felt an unpleasant sensation left by this interview, a lot of coldness, little empathy, and a lot of judgment. Needless to say, I did not pass the selection, and although I would have liked to receive feedback to understand better, I never heard back. A company that promises inclusivity, communication, and trust, unfortunately, left me very disappointed. I hope to have the chance to change my mind in the future.
