& Process

The interview process for this technical role was pretty standard. While you don't have to actively code, you do need a solid grasp of it from your past experience. I had three interviews, all done remotely over Zoom. The first one was with the hiring manager and some of the team's key people. Then, I talked to their principal architect in the second interview, and finally, their CIO in the third. They really emphasized culture fit too. The questions were generally quite broad, and there weren't any trick questions or anything like that. Just make sure you can back up everything you say. Giving a correct answer isn't enough on its own.

I applied online and uploaded my resume, filled out some forms, and completed a quiz with about 100 questions. This quiz took me over 30 minutes to finish. About 18 hours later, I got rejected without any explanation. It felt like a waste of time because many of the questions weren't related to the job, or even to working at a credit union. Maybe recruiters could ask about my hobbies as an icebreaker during an in-person interview. I don't recommend going through this process.

I had to fill out a full application on their website, submit my resume, and take assessments. Their website says that all steps, including assessments, must be completed before they review your application. The last time I applied, they rejected my application while I was still trying to complete everything. The whole process seems designed to attract people with degrees but no experience. It really feels like the hiring process filters out experienced candidates.

So I applied for a different role but the recruiter thought I'd be a better fit for this one. I talked with two people who have been with the company for over a decade. We started by discussing my work history and then they laid out what the job entails. They asked if I'd used some of their specific tools and platforms. I explained that while I hadn't used their exact platforms, I had extensive experience with similar technologies, especially in my current role where we've been building out a data warehouse and data sources for about a year and a half. This seemed to go well initially, but then they kept asking about other specific tools used at ICCU. It felt like they were primarily looking for candidates with direct experience with their particular stack, which seemed a bit restrictive.
