First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at IAVA.
Human Resources
I arrived at the scheduled time, and they had my resume printed. They invited me into a very nice office where the HR interview took place. All the staff were friendly throughout.
- What is your experience level in managing personnel?
Director
It was a pretty standard interview process. They didn't ask many questions about my background, which made me wonder if they'd already decided to hire me or if the interview was just a formality. Overall, the process felt quite typical.
- Can you discuss your previous work experience?
Transition Manager
I had a phone screen with HR first. Then I went to the NY office twice for interviews with the Director and Chief Program Officer. After that, I had a phone interview with the Chief People Officer. It was a bit disorganized though, as on two of those visits, the people I was supposed to meet weren't available. After my last phone call, they said they'd be in touch in a week or two with next steps. I followed up after 3 weeks because I hadn't heard anything, and they said they were super busy but still interested and would reach out soon. I haven't heard anything since.
- Can you share an instance where you had to use creativity to solve an issue?
Referral Program Specialist
I had three phone interviews and then an in-person interview where I met two people who had interviewed me before. I was supposed to meet more people in Washington DC for the in-person, but they were unavailable due to a scheduling mix-up. The two interviewers I met in person had interviewed me over the phone but didn't seem to remember me and asked basically the same questions again. After they finished and told me about the DC people not being available, I was left alone for a while until two employees from the program I was applying for joined. This was the best part of the interview; it was good to ask them questions, and they were very honest with their answers. After that, an HR person told me they would call about rescheduling a video conference interview with the DC folks. Everything seemed to have gone really well, and HR made it clear I'd be contacted about the next interview. However, they never contacted me. When I emailed the HR contact I'd been emailing with, I got no reply. It was very unprofessional to be ghosted like this, especially since I had other job offers I was considering. I'm a combat veteran and was really hoping for an answer either way because I truly wanted to work for this organization, but I eventually had to accept they wouldn't reply and took a great job offer with a major hospital in NYC. Overall, the interview process wasn't bad, but being told one thing and then having communication stop was a really amateur and unprofessional move on their part, something I've never experienced with any organization worth working for.
- Can you describe your experience?
- What makes you want to work here?
- Tell me about your interest in this specific role.
