The interview process for IMSG, a government contractor, was quite lengthy. It required multiple resume submissions and calls to connect with someone, and I suspect a former employee's recommendation was key to getting a phone conversation. After a few weeks with no follow-up, I almost gave up on hearing back for an agency interview. Eventually, they did call and scheduled a phone interview. A week later, I had a panel interview. This was followed by an interview with my potential supervisor. About a week after that, I received a job offer.

After applying via email for a contractor role I learned about through coworkers, the IMSG program manager interviewed me informally in person at NOAA. She asked about my interest, experience, salary, and start date. She said she'd forward my info to the NOAA hiring manager. Two weeks later, I called her and found out I wasn't referred for an interview. She claimed interviews were still going on, but coworkers confirmed the job was offered to someone else who could start immediately and work for less.

First, I had a 15-minute HR phone interview with standardized questions. About two weeks later, I was invited for an onsite interview which lasted an hour and also consisted of standardized questions. The interview itself went well, and the interviewers were friendly. I found that highlighting my accomplishments with specific examples resonated well with the managers.

I had one phone interview which was basically H.R. questions. They were asking about my background and qualifications. It was for a job at a government agency. I think I was well qualified for this role and I'm not sure why I didn't pass the H.R. screen unless they already had another person in mind for the position.
