First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Internal Communications Specialist
I had a phone screener with HR, then two culture-fit panel interviews onsite, and finally a Zoom interview with the hiring manager. The HR team was super communicative, sending details about the interview format, and the employee panel interviewers were really open and helpful. It was a respectful and enriching experience, even though I didn't end up getting an offer.

Data Engineer
Started with a 30-minute chat with the Hiring Manager where we went over my resume and I was asked some algorithmic brain teasers. Then I had a take-home project to complete over the course of a week. After that, I came in for a presentation of my project, and then stayed for what seemed like a super day, although this wasn't super clear from the emails. Got an automated rejection email the following week without any feedback on my take-home work.

- Can you describe the best practices for using Zarr?
Investment Analyst
I interviewed with HHMI for almost three months. I went through a few rounds and made it to what was supposed to be the last step, the superday. But after I said I was ready to move forward, they stopped responding. Then they told me they hired someone else without even setting up my final interview. It felt like a total waste of my time and energy. Also, the person I talked to kept telling me to withdraw, like maybe I'd get other offers. Instead of trying to get my superday scheduled, they seemed to be waiting for me to just quit. It was a letdown and made me feel like they didn't care about my time.
- Why are you interested in working for Howard Hughes Medical Institute?
Postdoctoral Associate
I had an initial recruiter screen, then an informal chat with the PI. After that, I was asked to give a 40-minute presentation on my PhD work. The PI and postdocs asked a lot of questions during the interview, all related to my research. It was a few hours long over Zoom since I'm international. I heard back about four months later, as they were interviewing other candidates too. I had to keep checking in with the PI and recruiter for updates.
- Can you describe the cell model you utilized in your research?
