First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Howard Brown.
Patient Service Representative
Since the interview was during the peak of COVID, I had a video interview with the site supervisor and practice manager. It was conducted over Ring Central. Basic interview questions were asked, such as why us and about my experience. A key requirement was being LGBTQIA+ friendly.
- What motivates you to work for this organization?
- Can you describe your relevant experience?
- Is it true that you must be LGBTQIA+ friendly?
Medical Assistant
I applied for an MA job and had an interview via video call with three women. They seemed uninterested from the start and didn't seem to have read my resume, asking me how I'd 'adapt' to outpatient work when I already had almost a year of experience. I explained that no adaptation was needed. They then asked about my availability, and I told them I was fully available except for short Saturday shifts due to religious reasons. The interview lasted 20 minutes, and the only substantial question was about taking blood pressure. I was surprised by their attitude, given my background. I got a rejection email less than an hour later. I emailed the recruiter for feedback and was told it was because of my request to not work Saturdays. This confirmed my impression of their unprofessionalism, especially with the written response. I sent them some legal resources about religious accommodation. They replied again, stating the rejection was due to my 'abundance' of inpatient work and 'lack' of outpatient experience, which contradicts my resume showing 11 months of each. They didn't engage in a discussion about accommodating my religious needs, opting instead for a false excuse, showing a lack of integrity. In retrospect, I think my appearance might have led them to dismiss me immediately.

Assistant Controller
I put in my application online on a Monday, and then had a phone screen on Wednesday. The next week, I interviewed with the person who would be my manager. The week after that, I had a panel interview. I got the offer about three and a half weeks after I first applied. The whole process was pretty organized. They let me know the salary right away during the phone screen. Apparently, it's a fixed amount for each role, so there's no negotiation, which they do to keep salaries fair across the board. I actually really liked that, and the pay seems reasonable. The panel interview had a few standard "tell me about a time when" questions, but mostly it was about meeting the team I'd be working with and them figuring out what I'd bring to the company. I had plenty of time to ask my own questions and get a better feel for the job, and to see if I thought I'd get along with my manager. Overall, it was a good experience.
- What would you do if your colleagues weren't supportive of a process change you suggested?
- What's your understanding of Howard Brown Health?
Patient Experience Associate
I went through a few steps. First, there was a one-way interview where I had 1 minute to answer questions about the company mission, patient interactions, and my previous work. After that, I had a Zoom interview with the department director and the recruiter. The director asked about my past experience and how it applies to the job, and how I'd handle patient complaints. The recruiter was there too and asked about my expectations for pay, culture, benefits, and growth. The interview lasted about 30-45 minutes. They said they'd call within a week, but they called a few hours later with an offer. The whole thing took about 10-12 days.
