Firefighter
First you apply online at www.hfdcareers.org. You need to have at least 24 College Credits or 2 years of active US military service. Then you take the Physical Abilities Test, which includes running 1.5 miles in 13:07 and some basic strength/endurance parts. After that, you take the Civil Service Exam, a written test about personality, basic math, and spatial awareness. Then there's a one-on-one chat with a recruiter, which isn't hard, just to see why you want to join HFD and answer your questions. Next is a polygraph exam, followed by a background check, drug testing, uniform fitting, fingerprints, necessary immunizations, and a medical exam.
- What makes you want to be a part of the Houston Fire Department?

The hiring process was quite involved. Initially, candidates had to complete a civil service exam. Those with the top scores were then invited for an in-person interview. Following the interview, successful candidates proceeded to a drug and polygraph test. If these tests were passed, a job offer was extended, leading to the fire academy. A probationary period of 12 months followed employment.
