Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Hotjar.
Python Developer
We talked about the salary range and benefits first, and I decided to move forward. They sent me an email asking me to record a video answering 5 questions, which I thought was a neat way to get to know applicants. But then, another email came saying I didn't make it to the next round. It felt pretty unprofessional. I recorded the video anyway since nobody got back to my emails about the confusion. After 3 weeks of radio silence, I finally got an email saying I hadn't made it to the next round. It was a terrible experience.
- What's the lowest salary you'd accept?
- What would you ideally want to be doing on a Monday morning?
- What aspects of this role particularly interest you?
Python Developer
The interview process was a disaster. Before submitting my CV, there was a lengthy form with a recruitment task and many questions. After applying, there were weeks of silence, followed by a brief acceptance message. Then, several more weeks of silence passed, even after I inquired about the status via email and Facebook. Eventually, I received a message apologizing for being forgotten, with no further explanation or feedback on my application or the recruitment task. It felt like they were testing patience, but the lack of communication and a clear rejection was unprofessional.
- Can you describe how you would build a basic version of the Hotjar Recording feature?
Python Developer
The hiring process was rather extensive, beginning with an initial application, followed by a video where I answered specific questions, then an interview, a substantial coding assignment, and finally a review of that assignment. Despite its length, it offered a valuable opportunity to gain an internal perspective on Hotjar's operations and to confirm mutual fit.
- The coding task was enjoyable to complete and prepare for, feeling similar to a real project where there was room for exploration.
