I had a recruiter call with an HR person I'd interviewed with before. Then, the HR person asked me to come in to meet the VP of the department the same day. I mentioned I was wearing casual clothes because my current job doesn't have a dress code and asked if that was okay. She said it would be fine and she'd let the VP know. When I met the VP, he was rude and didn't give me his contact info when I asked. I apologized for my attire. A week later, I followed up with HR, and she said the VP was concerned about my casual dress, thinking I was 'that casual.' She didn't give a definitive yes or no, which felt unprofessional. I felt blamed for something outside my control, as I wouldn't have dressed that way if I'd known.
