First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Horizon Health Services.
Counselor
It was a two-part interview process with a case study. I talked to a manager for about an hour, and then I spoke with the head of counselors. You really need to show professionalism and have some questions ready for them at the end.
- Could you tell me about your strengths and weaknesses?
- What's the connection between mental health and substance abuse?
- How do you take care of yourself?
Admissions Specialist
I applied online and the hiring manager called me in for an interview. The first interview went really well. But the second one was the total opposite. It was with the hiring manager and her boss, who is like, upper management. I felt like they were interrogating me psychologically. I think the senior lady was being way too invasive with questions about my personal motivations, disguised as trying to 'get to know me.' The thing is, they just need to know if I can work well with others, not the inner workings of my heart and soul, or if they could find something wrong with me. That's what it felt like, like they were judging me and looking for flaws. I stayed calm and professional, so they didn't know how I felt. I was also put off when the upper management woman said she 'doesn't want to hire depression and she didn't mean in a clinical sense.' This is an agency that helps people with mental illness, so you'd think there'd be some compassion and understanding for staff. I get not wanting someone who's not positive or brings down the work vibe. But depression is common, and I suffer from it. When I'm depressed, I'm not outgoing, but I'm not rude or unprofessional, I just get quiet, which I am anyway. That comment really bothered me and made me feel like I couldn't be myself. The manager was great, though. I would have liked to work for her, but if that's the culture the administration is creating, it's not okay. I was offered the job and told I had four days to decide. I didn't plan on taking four days; I was going to respond within 24 hours. But very early the next morning, after the offer was made late the previous afternoon, I was told the administrator wanted an answer by the end of the day. I wanted to give it serious thought because I really liked the manager and needed the job. That also didn't sit right with me. I'm still unsure how involved the administrator would have been in the day-to-day aspects of the role. I really liked the manager, but the administrator's unprofessional, intrusive behavior and the low pay made it a no.
- What would your former coworkers and employers say about you, and how would that play out in real life?
- What are your personal motivations?
- What is your level of personal insight?
Behavior Technician
Waiting for a callback after the interviews was awful, you really gotta have patience. They eventually emailed back with a job offer. The interview itself had back-to-back sessions for the first and second rounds, and each one was under 40 minutes.
- What would you do if you saw a coworker doing something that you knew was incorrect?
Care Coordinator
I had 5 interviews with different people. The team was welcoming and kind. They talked about the agency and department as a whole, covering the pros and cons. A drug test was part of the process. The pay normally starts at $18.
