First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Honda Research Institute USA.
PhD Intern
The interview had three parts. First, a 10-15 min research presentation with Q&As. Second, an interview with questions related to your field, like general ML and Robotics. They'll also ask engineering questions about how you'd design solutions. Third, there was a coding interview. It wasn't exactly like LeetCode but also not super specific to the domain. They were helpful during the coding part.
- Could you elaborate on ROS concepts such as topics, nodes, subscribers, and publishers?
Robotics Software Engineer
It was a single round, and the team lead interviewed me. They were asking questions about my Python, C++, and ROS2 programming knowledge. I was interviewed for the autonomy team that develops software for off-road autonomous vehicles.
- Could you write a simple ROS2 node in Python that includes two subscribers and one publisher? The node should process data from the subscribers to perform calculations and then publish the outcome.
Research Engineer
It was pretty weird. We had a one-hour presentation, and then I talked with the team members for four hours. These were one-on-one chats with the senior folks in the group I'd be joining. We just had a casual chat about what I'd done before and how it fit the job I applied for. I think they really wanted to see if my past projects were relevant to the role.
- Can you tell me about your research projects?
- How would you approach solving problems within the domain you've applied for?
- What subjects did you study in your courses?
Intern
I had this video interview with two teams at the same time for an internship role, which was a bit challenging. I actually wished they would have interviewed me separately. They went over a lot of questions about my research and my background. They also asked a bunch of C++ syntax questions, and then they gave me a coding question to solve.
- One coding question was asked, along with questions about my background.
