Home Cleaner
The interview process for Homejoy involved a few steps. I first passed a phone interview. Then, there was an in-person interview that was held a couple of hours away from my place. It lasted from 11 am to 1 pm. They didn't offer any snacks or water, which was a bit unexpected since it was during lunchtime. The final stage was a home cleaning evaluation. I had to go to another house, also a couple of hours away, and clean with a Homejoy rep for about 4.5 hours. The rep mentioned it was a very dirty house, and it really was a lot of work. The next day, they called to say I didn't get the job because I apparently didn't know enough about cleaning products. The whole experience was discouraging. The travel expenses for the multiple long drives were a burden, and cleaning a house for so long for free felt unfair, especially since I'm looking for a job because I need the money. It felt like they were trying to get free labor and were being cheap, unlike other companies that offer paid training. It was frustrating to put in so much effort and time only to be rejected without compensation, and it didn't feel like a courteous or responsible way to treat people who are struggling financially.
- Do you have product knowledge about cleaning supplies?
Cleaner
The interview process was quick and felt a bit like non-job training. On the first day, we met in a room and went over policies. The second day, I had a job evaluation after cleaning an apartment. On the third day, I was hired and went to their Wall Street office to get my supplies, which included a vacuum (too heavy) and some cleaning fluids. They give you these when you first start, but then pretty much I was paying for all my own supplies and transportation.
- Do you have previous professional cleaning experience before Homejoy?
Data Scientist
Got contacted by a recruiter, the whole process was pretty disorganized and took forever. I had to go in for a full day of puzzler coding questions. The most memorable one was this SQL question that was so messed up the interviewer had to keep looking at his notes to figure it out. After that, there was another phone screen with someone I'd already met in person, but they didn't remember me or that we'd already talked.
- Tell me about your experience with puzzler programming questions.
- Describe your approach to solving complex SQL problems, referencing the need for interviewers to consult notes.

If you fit the position you'll get a call from talent acquisition for a phone interview, then an appointment will be set up for an office interview. You'll check in with the Office Manager, then you'll proceed to one of the assigned meeting rooms, and you're going to be interviewed by more than one person. Such as the Operation Manager, Supervisor of the Department, and possibly a fellow co-worker depending on circumstances, possibly even the CEO herself.
- The most difficult question you receive is your knowledge of tech.
