Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Holland & Barrett.
Sales Assistant
It was a quick one on one with the hiring manager, maybe 10-15 mins. We talked about customer service and sales experience, my availability, and training for the role. The interview vibe was a bit off though, the office was super small and cramped, and I was on a high stool looking down at them on chairs.
- Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
- What makes you want to join Holland and Barrett?
- Describe a time you had to handle a challenging customer.
Sales Assistant
Getting the interview was easy, answered the online questions, sent my CV. A few days later was invited to book an interview online for the following week. Started the interview on the shop floor. Was asked to pick out of a folder to sell a product to the interviewer, had to point out in the store where it was and how i would sell it. Was meant to do a part of interacting with customers but it was a quiet day so it was skipped. Went to the back to complete questions, very generic sales questions (which was no good for me really as i was new to sales) and talked about and where the training would be. Was very laid back, talked about the questions in dept and seemed a good interview. As i left gave my photocopies of my right to work and was told i'd hear that Saturday either way, a phone call if i got the job and a email if not. Waited all day and got nothing, had to send a message myself to the company to find out i had been unsuccessful (which was really disappointing as communication up till then was fantastic.)
- Tell me what you know about our company.
- Can you share an instance when you dealt with a challenging customer?
- Describe a situation where you had to work alongside someone you didn't get along with.
Sales Assistant
I applied online and then got a call from the store manager. My interview was the next day. The manager took me to a room and asked me over 20 questions, some phrased differently. She asked about improving the store, motivation, job expectations, customer service, self-description, past bad work experiences, sales techniques, and making people feel welcome. She was friendly, making me comfortable. She then asked if I had questions and told me about the role and aiming higher.
- What would you do if a customer came to complain?
