First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at HM Revenue and Customs.
Compliance Officer
It was an online interview with just two questions, pretty straightforward. You'll need your passport handy. One question was about how data impacts your decision-making, and the other was about handling a tough period.
- Can you tell me about how data affects your decision-making?
- How did you navigate a challenging situation?
Compliance Officer
The interview process will include Behaviour Questions, where they expect you to use the STAR method. Common behaviours for Compliance Officer roles are Making Effective Decisions, Communicating and Influencing, Delivering at Pace, Working Together, and Managing a Quality Service. Example questions include: “Tell us about a time you analysed information to make a decision.”, “Describe a situation where you had to challenge something that wasn’t correct.”, and “Tell us about a time you explained something complicated to someone.” They’re looking for clear structure, evidence, and impact. There will also be Strength Questions, which are quick, instinctive questions like: “Do you enjoy detailed work?”, “How do you feel about working with rules and regulations?”, and “What motivates you to complete tasks to a high standard?”. For these, no STAR method is needed — they want your natural preference.
- Can you share an instance of dealing with an unhappy customer and how you de-escalated the situation?
Compliance Officer
Applied in Feb 21, passed online tests which were quick to get feedback on. Then heard nothing until June when I was asked for an online interview. Questions were as expected but interviewers were robotic and couldn't tell me anything about the role. They just asked and I answered, no info about the role or teams which is strange. No feedback for almost 2 months, then told I passed but there wasn't actually a job but they'd get in touch if one came up within the next year.
- Can you tell me about your experience with teamwork and how you navigate challenges within a team?
- How do you approach dealing with difficulties when working as part of a team?
