I applied for the "Mathematician/C++ Programmer" job with my resume and cover letter. Got an email soon after to set up a phone interview with the hiring manager for the math team. The phone interview was pretty standard, asking about my programming background and career goals. However, the interviewer seemed confused about the job requirements and qualifications, and kept implying my career aspirations didn't match the role, even though I was referencing the job posting. Maybe we just didn't click. Anyway, he forwarded my resume to another manager in charge of hiring C++ programmers. We also had a phone call, and he was much easier to talk to. He sent me a take-home coding problem (a simple dice game console app) with no deadline. I finished it and sent it back, then waited two weeks. After I followed up, he let me know the position was filled and he'd reach out if anything else opens up.

- Can you elaborate on how you'd fit in here, given your stated goal of designing and implementing mathematical concepts/algorithms in code within a gaming environment doesn't seem to align with the job we're offering? I talked to a producer, and the questions were all about my resume. Then, I chatted with the social media manager and the insight specialist because I couldn't reach the CRM Coordinator. They asked about my skills with Facebook, Twitter, and Analytics. They didn't seem very interested in my resume, and the interview felt rushed, like they didn't want to move forward with me. I tried to follow up about my application but never got a response. It's frustrating because they posted about all the intern openings on LinkedIn, and I still didn't hear back. I suspect being a community college student, not from a four-year university, put me at a disadvantage.

I reached out to someone I knew at the company for a referral. Since I was not in the NYC area for the interviews, the whole thing was done over the phone or via email. I had an initial screening with the hiring manager, then an interview with the product team a few days later. By the end of that week, the hiring manager called to let me know I got the job.
