First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Helion Energy.
Mechanical Engineer
It started with a typical recruiter phone screen, then a technical interview, and then likely in-person rounds. They got back to me fast and everyone was super nice. The technical interview was definitely technical; they asked a bunch of questions about statics, materials, and fluid dynamics. It seems like they really care about solid technical knowledge for this role, no matter your experience level.
- Could you explain beam loading?
- What are your thoughts on materials?
- Tell me about materials.
Senior Systems Engineer
I applied through a job board and got a call from a recruiter. They were looking for the best and thought I might fit two roles. The recruiter then set up a call with the Hiring Manager. He was nice and asked about tech stuff and hypothetical scenarios that matched my experience. He said I qualified for the two roles but they needed a Sr. Linux Engineer more, though the job description wasn't ready yet. He was working to get it posted and then the People team would schedule an onsite. The onsite happened after a call with my main contact from the People team the day before. They were upfront about what each interviewer would focus on, which helped me prep. I researched everyone I was meeting, looked at their backgrounds, and thought of questions for their level: policy for Directors, specific tech for Security, and blockers for SDEs. During a tour with a People coordinator, I asked about the culture. I felt like I interviewed them too, to see if it was a good fit. I wasn't ready for a whiteboarding session at the end, which was more Network Engineering focused, but as a Systems Engineer, you need to know the whole operation. Each in-person interview focused on a company value, and some questions put you in a tough spot with conflicting values. The last interview was with an executive where I asked about challenges during rapid growth. The executive was honest and direct, giving an answer that might make the wrong person question the fit. It was good to hear the blunt truth, aligning with their 'Delivering Hard Truths' value.
- Can you share an instance where a rapid decision you made negatively affected users, and how you managed it? If you had more time, would you have approached it differently?
- Tell me about a time you had to act fast due to a challenge, which ended up negatively impacting users. How did you handle it? And in hindsight, would you have done anything differently if you had more time to prepare?
- Describe a situation where you were pressured to make a quick decision that had adverse effects on users. Explain your response and what you might change if you had adequate planning time.
Firmware Engineer
It was a recruiter screen, then a HM interview, followed by a technical interview with some engineers, and finally an onsite with a presentation. I only got to the HM interview stage. The HM really gave off vibes that he's just waiting for the company to go public so he can get rich from fusion energy. The rejection email was pretty blunt, saying my project contributions weren't impressive and that I lacked engineering problem-solving skills. It's a junior role, which is rough. But it's a startup aiming for IPO, so maybe that explains the harsh feedback.
- Can you discuss your past projects, detailing your contributions and your approach to managing tasks with tight deadlines?
Production Supervisor
The people I interacted with were very friendly, making for a good interview overall. They decided not to move forward with my application because they were seeking candidates with significantly more extensive experience in this specific role. I reached the second round of interviews. The recruiter was pleasant, and the potential manager was also very friendly. I have no negative feelings about the outcome; it would have been an amazing opportunity for me. I understand their decision to hire someone with more relevant experience, and I even received some helpful feedback after being rejected.
- Can you describe your past experience?
- Following up on your experience, can you provide more details about aspects relevant to this role?
