First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Heifer International.
Digital Marketing Specialist
The first two interview rounds felt pretty good, with good energy and I felt supported. But the final interview was unnerving, really low energy, and intimidating. They also had an unpaid assignment as part of the final round. You don't get paid for it, and there's no paperwork to guarantee they won't use your work. I didn't hear back for a month after the final interview about not getting the job, and that was only after I reached out to them.

Mission Effectiveness Coordinator
So first, Heifer does a pre-screening, then they invite you in for an hour-long interview in person. They ask that you complete an assignment relevant to the position with about 48-72 hours' notice before the in-person interviews. My complaint during this interview process was that the panel did not coordinate their own questions before the interview. I got the same question repeated about 3 times. Then, they did not leave me any room at the end of the interview to ask them questions. I've never experienced any other employer that has cut off a meeting or interview without letting the candidate ask a couple of questions of the committee.
- What project management technology systems have you used?
Program Director
It started with a 30 minute phone screen with HR. Then, I had two panel interviews over Zoom. The first one had a variety of people from the org and was scripted with behavior-based questions. The second one was with the two VPs that this role reports to. These went pretty well. I didn't hear back, so I emailed the HR person a week later, but they never responded. A month after the last interview, I got an automated rejection email, which was super weird since I did several rounds.
- Based on your resume, can you explain your qualifications for this role?
- How do your colleagues perceive your management approach?
- Can you share an instance where a project you were involved with failed, and detail your response?
Creative Director
I interviewed with a panel of about 3-4 people from the department. There were some standard questions and some more thoughtful ones. Some questions are clearly standard for every interview, while others seemed to point to an underlying issue, like asking how I would handle team conflict.
- How would you handle a situation where your work requires input from another team that is unwilling to provide it?
