Had a quick phone chat where they explained the role and asked some general questions, pretty standard pre-interview screening. They were looking for an underwriting assistant and an underwriter. Got an email response in 2 days with feedback in 5 days, which was surprising since companies usually send generic emails. Turns out the underwriting position was no longer needed, so they needed someone more experienced to cover both roles.

Normal conversation about 90 mins. Introduction of interviewers, self-introduction and some technical questions. The conversation took place in a good atmosphere. The participants on the company side were from the technical department and HR. How well do you think you will fit into the new team? Do you think you will clash with [...] in the team? The initial meeting involved introductions from everyone present, followed by questions about my personal background. Then, the open position and the department were introduced. Questions regarding my background and suitability for the role were asked. Personal questions were also part of the discussion. The department head and an HR representative were present during the conversation. Both were very friendly and didn't ask any trick questions, creating a very pleasant atmosphere.

Everything went smoothly and professionally overall. However, I would have wished for a bit more transparency and honest feedback from the beginning. I only found out indirectly that it was ultimately solely due to the budget. Clear communication right at the start could have avoided unnecessary conversations and misunderstandings. That would have made the whole process much more efficient and pleasant for both sides.
